Four Zips Earn Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four members of the University of Akron women's basketball team were named to the 2018 Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC team, the league announced on Thursday.
The four Akron student-athletes honored by the conference are sophomore Alyssa Clay (Indianapolis, Ind.), sophomore Shayna Harmon (Ashville, Ohio), redshirt junior Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio), and sophomore Caitlin Vari (Richfield, Ohio).
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
In total, 61 student-athletes were named to the 2018 squad from all 12 members of the Mid-American Conference.
Sefcik is a two-time honoree of the Academic All-MAC team, while Clay, Harmon, and Vari are first time recipients.
Clay appeared in 30 contests and made 11 starts in 2017-18. The 11 starts were Clay's first of her career. In 30 games, Clay averaged 6.7 points per game while shooting .349 from the field and.351 from long range. The Zips guard scored 202 total points with 138 of those points coming from beyond the arc. Along with scoring, Clay grabbed 39 rebounds, recorded 18 assists, and nine steals. Clay scored a career-high 22 points along with six three-pointers, also a career-high.
Harmon appeared in 24 games and made 21 starts for the Zips in 2017-18. Harmon posted a career-high 4.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists (55 total) per game. On the year, Harmon shot .346 for the season en route to scoring 110 total points.
Sefcik appeared in 19 games and made 16 starts for Akron in 2017-18. Sefcik led the Zips in scoring, posting 11.9 points per game. The Akron three-point specialist shot .340 (55-for-162) from long distance and set a new Akron record and tied a Mid-American Conference record for most three-pointers made in a single game (10) against Ohio Christian. With the help of 10 triples, Sefcik scored a career-high 32 points against the Trail Blazers. To go along with scoring, Sefcik total 29 rebounds, 25 assists, and a career-high 25 steals.
Vari appeared in 26 games and made 11 starts in 2017-18 for the Zips. A member of the Akron front court scored 5.8 points per game, shot a team-high .520 shooting percentage, grabbed a team second-best 5.6 rebounds (146), a team second-best 21 blocks and recorded 13 steals. Vari's .520 shooting percentage now ranks sixth all-time in program history in a single season. Vari's 49 offensive rebounds were also second-most on the squad.
