CLEVELAND – University of Akron women's tennis swept the weekly Mid-American Conference honors on Wednesday as true freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) was named the MAC Singles Player of the Week, and seniors Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) captured MAC Doubles Team of the Week accolades.
In the team's MAC opener, Vasilescu beat Eastern Michigan's Marie Mayerova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. In the win over Toledo, she defeated Deedee Leenabanchong, 6-4, 6-1, for her sixth consecutive win in singles action.
Overall, Vasilescu stands 14-2 this spring and a perfect 2-0 in MAC play.
This Vasilescu's second honor this spring. She also earned recognition on January 31. Vasileschu is the third Zip to earn MAC singles honors this season. Senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) was honored on Jan. 24.
"Having Miruna consistently play at such a high level has been amazing to watch," Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Playing high as a freshman in this conference isn't easy, but she is showing how much she wants to win, and how hard she is willing to work to help this team succeed."
In doubles action, Knezevich and Wituski opened MAC play at a perfect 2-0 at No. 3 doubles. The pair knocked off Eastern Michigan's Giulianna Ansaloni and Natalia Regalado, 6-2. Knezevich and Wituski battled Toledo's Megan Miller and Thalita Rodrigues to a 7-6 (4) victory, helping the Zips to the doubles point in both matches.
This spring at No. 3 doubles, Knezevich and Wituski stand 2-2 overall and 2-0 in MAC play.
Knezevich and Wituski are the second Zips' duo to earn MAC doubles honors this spring. Sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) earned doubles team recognition on March 7.
"Carli and Waverly came out and helped set the tone for us in both matches last weekend, helping us secure both doubles points," Padgett said. "They have really found wonderful synergy, and it's amazing to see two seniors step up for us like this at the most important time."
Akron travels Bowling Green on Friday, March 30, and Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, April 1.
