Akron Falls 3-2 to Western Michigan in Match Play

Akron, Ohio – After receiving an opening round bye, the No. 4 seeded Akron women's golf team fell 3-2 to No. 5 Western Michigan in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge on Monday at the 6,068-yard, Par-72 Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

Junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) and sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) won their matches as Nicholson posted a 3&1 win and Wentworth carded a 6&5 victory.

Nicholson defeated WMU's Claire Hernandez after falling behind on the first hole. Nicholson and Hernandez played even for the next seven holes when Nicholson squared the match on hole No. 9. On the back, Nicholson grabbed the lead on No. 10 and extended it by another stroke on No. 13. Nicholson entered the 17^th hole with a two-hole advantage and won the hole to finish the match 3&1.

Wentworth's performance was more dominant as she defeated Cameryn Lucia 6&5. Wentworth led throughout, winning the first hole and went 2up after the third hole. She followed with a win on hole No. 4 and again on No. 6 for a four-stroke advantage. Wentworth won two of the last three holes of the front-9 for a six-hole spread but fell back to five after No. 10. She regained the six-hole spread on hole No. 12 where she remained on top until the match ended after hole No. 13.

However, senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) fell 3&2 to Jasmine Chee, while Freshmen Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) and Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) dropped their matches' 1UP and 3&2, respectively. WMU's Julia Champion broke an all-square match on the 12^th hole and led the rest of the way to down Pikunas, and Pearce fell to WMU's Megan Watkins.

The Zips will be back in action against the No. 6 seeded Bowling Green Falcons, teeing off from tee No. 10 starting with seven-minute interval tee times ranging from 8:25 to 8:53 a.m.
