AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to West Virginia on Friday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
Â
"Today was a tough loss for us," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett.  "We played well enough to see a different fate, but we didn't do enough during crucial points to pick up the team win.  Mentally, we struggled today, which was the difference in the match.  We were physically as strong today, but that wasn't enough.  We are young and inexperienced as a team, but we need our upperclassmen to step up and lead more by example, on and off court."
Â
WVU (2-2 overall) claimed the doubles point with hard-fought contests against the Zips (5-5 overall) that could have gone either way. At No. 2 doubles, Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz battled sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) to a 7-6 (6) finish.
Â
At No. 3 doubles, Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau narrowly defeated junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio), 7-5.
Â
"Rita stood out today in both singles and doubles and provided a positive example of what we need from everyone on this team," Padgett added. Â "She led wonderfully during doubles and showed excellent determination in both of her matches today."
Â
In singles action, the Zips captured two wins. Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) remained undefeated in singles action (7-0 overall) with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Anne-Sophie Courteau at No. 2 singles.
Â
"Miruna continues to impress with her high level of play, but she knows that she still has work to do in order to get better mentally, and I know that she will put in the necessary work," he said.
Â
At No. 4 singles, Echeverry (6-3 overall) picked up a 4-6, 4-3, victory via injury withdrawal by Paula Goetz.
Â
Akron concludes its home stand on Sunday, Feb. 18, with a 10 a.m. match against East Tennessee State. WVU and ETSU play each other on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m.  All matches will be held at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
