AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron and the University of South Carolina have agreed to play a football game on Dec. 1, 2018, at Noon in Williams-Brice Stadium.Â
Â
The game replaces UA's Sept. 1 contest at Nebraska, which was canceled due to lightning, and USC's Sept. 15 contest against Marshall, which was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.
"What a great opportunity to play at South Carolina against the Gamecocks," said Akron seventh-year head coach Terry Bowden. "Our young men were so disappointed when the Nebraska game was cancelled due to lightning. We felt it was important to give them a game in such a great venue."
"This gives us the best opportunity to earn a bowl bid," UA Director of Athletics Larry Williams said. "It will be a first-class trip that gives us the chance to match up against a quality opponent that evaded us in the opening weekend. Ray Tanner has been extremely collaborative throughout, and our student-athletes look forward to the opportunity."
Â
The Gamecocks are 4-3 this season and play at Ole Miss on Saturday.
Â
"Akron is a quality opponent and someone that we have to be prepared to play," said USC head coach Will Muschamp. "They've been to a bowl game two of the last three years. I've known Coach Bowden for many years and know that he'll have his team ready to play."
Â
The game will be televised on the SEC Network Alternate channel and can be streamed on SEC Network+ and the ESPN App on connected devices. The game will be broadcast on the Akron-IMG Sports Network (radio).
Â
"We are appreciative of Athletics Director Larry Williams and the administration at Akron in agreeing to play at Williams-Brice Stadium on Dec. 1," said USC Athletics Director Ray Tanner. "This will give our fans another opportunity to support our football program against a quality FBS opponent."
Â
Akron (4-4 overall, 2-3 MAC) travels to Eastern Michigan on Nov. 10 for a Noon game on ESPN3.
