Akron Swimming and Diving Remains in the Lead After Day Two of Magnus Cup Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team continued to break meet and pool records in the second day of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational at Busbey Natatorium on Saturday.
After two days of contest, Akron remains in first place with 1,007.50 points. Buffalo is in second place with 710.50 points, while Xavier rounds out the top three with 514 points. Cleveland State remains in the lead on the men's side of competition with 1,263.50 points.
Akron's 200 medley relay team of senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), freshman Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and senior Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) turned in a time of 1:38.84. Their time ranks sixth on Akron's all-time list.
Buffalo took the top two places in the 400 individual medley, while junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) was the top Zip in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 4:24.32.
In the third women's event of the evening, the 100 butterfly, sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) placed first with a time of 53.26. She not only improved her top time so far this season, but broke the meet record, which she had set a year ago (53.32). She also broke the pool record by .01 which was previously held by Molly McNamara of Cleveland State. Watson came in second with a time of 53.76, improving her top time in the event this season while also moving up to fifth on Akron's top ten all-time list.
Junior Ellie Nebraska (Delaware, Ohio) placed third in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:50.13, while Engle finished fourth at 1:50.65. In the 100 backstroke, Fazekas came in first, clocking in with a time of 54.51.
In the final swimming event of the evening, the 800 freestyle relay, the team comprised of Fazekas, junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.), Nogaj, and Watson clocked in with a time of 7:19.99, over seven seconds faster than the second place team. Their time broke the previous pool and meet record of 7:20.59 set by an Akron relay team at the Magnus Cup last year. The team's time also rates as Akon's eight fastest time in the event all-time.
In three-meter diving preliminary round, senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) recorded the top score at 305.05. Her score broke the previous meet record of 299.60, which was set by Akron's Rachel Aepelbacher in 2013. In the finals, Crail placed second with a score of 278.60, while Buffalo's Chloe Sarkis broke the meet record that Crail set earlier in the day, with a score of 316.70. Sophomore Andrea Bugariu (Troy, Mich.) placed fourth with 245.10 points.
The Zips compete in the final day of the Magnus Cup Invitational on Sunday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals will take place at 3 p.m.
