Women’s Tennis: Viking Invitational Day 1 Recap

CLEVELAND – The University of Akron women's tennis doubles teams claimed victories on the first day of competition at Cleveland State's Viking Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion on Friday.
All play was individual. No team scores were kept.
"I'm disappointed in our overall level of play today," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We had some opportunities to win matches that we let slip away, because we weren't doing the right things at the right times. We have a talented group of players, but it takes more than talent to win consistently at this level. In singles play, Holland and Sophia stood out for us, but the team, as a whole, needs to play smarter tennis, consistent when needed and aggressive when the opportunity presents itself. It's not always about winning; it's about getting better, and that's the message we are trying to convey."
In singles action against Connecticut, the Zips pulled off three victories. At No. 1 singles, redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Jackie Fitz-Randolph in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 2, sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) claimed a win against Mireille Moreau, 2-2, retired. At No. 7, freshman Holland Long (Rochester, N.Y.) battled Luciana Rabines to a 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory.
In doubles action against Bowling Green, Geier and Vasilescu beat out Polina Radeva and Ayumi Saski, 6-4, at No. 2. At No. 3, Claudia Cecilia Rosas Garcia (Gaudalajara, Mexico) and Long defeated Marta Bettinelli and Vanesa Pardo, 6-4.
Helping fill out UConn's doubles teams against Cleveland State, Akron's senior Luisa Echeverry (Cali Colombia) and freshman Alexis Steer (Powell, Ohio) handed CSU's Gaby Schoenberg and Lauren Longo a 6-3 defeat.
In Akron's doubles match against host Cleveland State, junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) picked up a 6-1 win over Schoenberg and Longo.
Action continues on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. in singles action with Bowling Green. The tournament schedule is listed below.
