AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's golf team wraps-up the Fall schedule on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 14-15 with the Fall Preview at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. hosted by Central Michigan.
Â
The Par 72, 6,125-yard Purgatory Golf Club is known for its 130+ bunkers and tall prairie grass rough. In addition, April's Mid-American Conference Championship will be played at the Purgatory Golf Club.
Â
"We are excited to make our return back to Purgatory, Zips' head coach Jenny King said. "This will bring back some great memories for our seniors Danielle and Makayla. It's a golf course that fits our team's games well. But it's also a great opportunity to see the course before the spring at the MAC Championship."
Â
The 12-team field includes host Central Michigan, Akron, Ball State, Belmont, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan, Fort Wayne, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan and Xavier.
Â
The Zips starting five remains consistent with the three prior Fall tournaments as seniors Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) and Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) lead the way. Sophomore Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) and junior Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) follow in the third and fourth positions, while freshman Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) rounds out the starting unit.
Â
The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and continuous play through 36 holes. Monday's final round is slated for a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
Â
In 2015-16, Akron Zips women's golf team experienced unprecedented success at this venue as former player Frida Fougberg and the Zips' current leader Danielle Nicholson each posted victories.
Â
Fougberg was the first Akron golfer to post a sub-70 score with a 69 (-3) effort at Purgatory and went on to claim the 2015 Fall Preview championship with a 69-71-80 - 221 (+5) tournament total. During the first round, Fougberg fired a then career-best and program-best single round record of 3-under par 69 score. For the tournament she collected 32 par scores and nine birdies.
Â
Later that same season (2016), Nicholson rallied to become Akron's first-ever MAC Champion. For three-consecutive rounds, Nicholson carded under-par scores en route to the MAC Championship win, 69 (-3), 71 (-1), and 71 (-1), respectively. She led or had a share of the lead throughout the tournament while collecting 35 pars, 12 birdies, and seven bogeys.
