Akron Drops 24-6 Decision at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Akron football dropped a 24-6 decision at Buffalo in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium.

Penalties and turnovers limited Akron (2-3 overall, 0-2 MAC) offensively. Buffalo (6-1 overall, 3-0 MAC) remained undefeated in league play.

For the Zips, senior Van Edwards, Jr. (Cape Coral, Fla.) led the rushers with 55 yards on seven carries. Under center, sophomore QB Kato Nelson (Hollywood, Fla.) went 12-of-29 for 115 yards. Sophomore WR Andre Williams (Orlando, Fla.) was the top receiver with three catches for 47 yards. Defensively, junior LB John Lako (Monroe, Mich.) had eight tackles, including seven solo stops.

For Buffalo, Jaret Patterson rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. QB Tyree Jackson went 16-of-30 for 212 yards and a touchdown. WR K.J. Osborn finished with 116 receiving yards on six receptions. MAC leader Khalil Hodge had a team-high 12 tackles.

Akron began the game by holding Buffalo scoreless on its opening drive. After fumbling the punt return, the Zips marched down the field. Utilizing a direct snap to senior WR Mykel Traylor-Bennett (Columbus, Ohio), UA earned a first down on the 35.  Senior PK Nick Gasser (Liberty Township, Ohio) converted a 48-yard field goal to put Akron on the scoreboard first.

On the next drive, the Bulls responded by marching down the field and Adam Mitcheson attempted a 40-yard field goal that went wide right.

The Bulls closed the opening quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to George Rushing to take a 7-3 edge with 47 seconds to go in the stanza.

In the second quarter, senior CB Kyron Brown (Boynton Beach, Fla.) intercepted the ball on the two-yard line, preventing a UB touchdown. But the Zips could not take advantage of the turnover.

With 6:49 to go in the half, UB's Mitcheson converted a 30-yard field goal to give the Bulls a 10-3 advantage.

With 1:05 to go in the half, Akron got the ball back and began its drive.  Nelson completed a four-yard reception to sophomore WR Dustin Burkhart (Akron, Ohio) and an 18-yard pass to Andre Williams. With time expiring, Gasser kicked a 44-yard field goal, bringing the Zips within four, 10-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Buffalo used a 12-play, 80-yard drive over 5:22 to add another touchdown. This time Jaret Patterson rushed four yards for the score, putting UB ahead, 17-6.

In the fourth quarter, Jackson capped off a 75-yard drive with a one-yard rush to give the Bulls the final 24-6 edge.

Akron travels to rival Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 20, for the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge game. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Dix Stadium on ESPN+.
