Football Falls to Iowa State, 41-14

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron football team fell, 41-14, to the Iowa State Cyclones at InfoCision Stadium- Summa Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Zips fell to 1-2 on the season, while the Cyclone improved to 2-1 overall.

Senior QB Thomas Woodson (Monroeville, Pa.) carried the offense with 240 yards of the Zips 331 yards of total offense. He completed 25-of-40 passes with two touchdowns.

Junior WR Kwadarrius Smith (Orlando Fla.) led the receiving corps with 76 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Senior WR Tra'Von Chapman (Cincinnati, Ohio) followed, catching eight passes for 53 yards, while senior WR A.J Coney (Orlando, Fla.) had four receptions for 52 yards.

The rushing attack was led by senior RB Warren Ball (Columbus, Ohio) with 11 carries for 46 yards. Ball also had four receptions for eight yards with his first career receiving touchdown.

The Zips' defensive unit was led by junior LB Ulysees Gilbert III (Ocala, Fla), who posted a team-best with 12 tackles. Junior LB Jamal Davis II (Canton, Ohio) recorded six tackles, including a team-high 1.5 tackles for a loss, and senior S Zach Guiser (Fayette City, Pa.) and junior CB Darian Dailey (Bradenton, Fla.) also recorded six tackles.

Cyclones' QB Jacob Park completed 24-of-33 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 38 yards and two touchdowns. Park connected with WR Trever Ryen six times for 80 yards. Allen Lazard also hauled in five passes for four yards and a touchdown. Running back David Montgomery racked up 22 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. Montgomery also had five receptions for 46 yards.

On the first possession of the game, the Zips' defense started out solid with a three-and-out, forcing Iowa State to punt. Woodson found some success early in the first drive connecting with Smith for a 17-yard gain, but after a sack the drive was ended. Iowa State followed with a eight play, 93-yard scoring drive to put seven points on the scoreboard first.

On the next possession for the Zips, Woodson completed a 14-yard pass to Smith, but the drive was stalled. Iowa State then went on for a six-play, 71-yard drive with 35 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 14-point lead.

After a Zips' defensive stop, Woodson drove Akron down the field for its first score. He completed three consecutive passes, starting with Coney for 11 yards, and ending with a 45-yard strike to Smith for a touchdown. Akron trailed 14-7 with 7:07 left in the second quarter.

Iowa State responded with back-to-back 40-yard field goals to push its lead to 20-7 before Akron found pay dirt again.

Trailing by 13-points, 20-7, the Zips responded with a 10-play, 75-yard drive scoring drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Woodson to Ball. Woodson passed for 69 yards on the drive to make the score 20-14 at the halftime.

In the second half, the Cyclones held Akron scoreless and added three touchdowns for the 41-14 win.
Akron travels to Troy (Ala.) for its final non-conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) on ESPN3.
