AKRON, Ohio– The University of Akron Athletics Department will be installing a new state-of-the-art videoboard in James A. Rhodes Arena as the first of many upgrades the University is implementing to enhance the fan experience at events, the University announced on Monday.
The videoboard will feature two sideline high-definition screens that measure 21 feet wide x 11 feet tall, two baseline high-definition screens that measure 16 feet wide x 9 feet tall, two 13 feet wide x 2 feet tall ribbons boards, sound system amplifiers and processors, and eight shot clocks and eight game clocks in the locker rooms. In addition to the center hung videoboard, Rhodes Arena will be outfitted with four new LED curved videoboards to be located on each column in the arena – 12.5 feet tall x four feet wide– that will provide player statistics. A new scorer's table with ribbon boards will also be added. The new videoboard will give fans 850 square feet of HD video.
"This is the first of many upgrades to our facility that will have an immediate impact on our fan and guest experience," said Director of Athletics Larry Williams. "We'd like to thank our very supportive donors and IMG College for making this significant upgrade possible. Community support is a vital element of success at the NCAA Division I level, and we are fortunate to be a part of just such a community."
The videoboard, estimated to cost $1.6 million, will be fully funded by private donors and the extension with IMG, pending approval of UA's Board of Trustees. It will be used for sporting events and other major community events at Rhodes Arena.
Installation by manufacturer Daktronics will begin in mid-August with project completion expected by early November.
