AKRON, Ohio— Heading into its first week of the 2017 season, the University of Akron football team selected its team captains, head coach Terry Bowden announced on Sunday.
Â
Leading the Zips in 2017 will be seniors RB Warren Ball (Columbus, Ohio), WR/PR A.J. Coney (Orlando, Fla.), and S Zach Guiser (Fayette City, Pa.).
Â
A preseason fourth-team All-MAC selection by Athlon Sports, Ball returns to the Zips' line-up as redshirt senior, earning a sixth year from the NCAA. The transfer from Ohio State had 181 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in two games last fall before suffering a season-ending injury at No. 10 Wisconsin. Ball is ranked at No. 22 nationally on Sport Illustrated's 2017 Freaks List of Top 40 workout warriors in college football.
Â
Named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, Coney had 15 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown in 12 games in 2016. On special teams, he returned nine kicks for 123 yards. Coney was named the team's Offensive MVP in the Weight Room following spring drills.
Â
A preseason All-MAC selection by Athlon Sports and College Sports Madness, Guiser was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and as a candidate for the National Football Foundation's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Just the second first-team Academic All-American in school history, Guiser is the only returning starter in the secondary. The safety finished fourth on the defense with 53 tackles, 2.0 TFL, a sack, an interception, a blocked punt, and two break-ups last fall.
Â
Akron returns 57 letterwinners, including 15 starters, to its spread offense and 4-3 defense. The Zips open the 2017 season at No. 6 Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Noon on ABC. In the home opener, Akron hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
Â
Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all six home games as well as a parking pass—start at only $60 each.
