CLEVELAND, Ohio – In the final weekly honors of the season, Akron junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) was named the Mid-American Conference women's tennis singles Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
"I am extremely proud of the continued success seen by Sophia on and off the court," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "She is not only an amazing player, but also one of the brightest young women I know. When you combine that with the fact that she is also a person of true character, as a coach, I couldn't ask for anything more from a player."
Named the MAC Player of the Year yesterday, Geier upset undefeated Carmen Blanco at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, in the final match of the regular season at defending MAC champion Ball State last weekend. Overall, the team captain is 29-3 in singles, including 22-2 this spring. In MAC action, Geier stands 7-1, including four consecutive wins.
The MAC singles Player of the Week honor is Geier's fourth honor this season. She earned prior recognition on Feb. 1, March 22, and April 12. Geier and partner Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) won MAC doubles Team of Week on March 1.
At the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship, hosted by Ball State, on April 28-30, the No. 2 seed Zips received a first round bye and will play the winner of the No. 3 Buffalo/No. 6 Western Michigan match in the semifinals on Saturday, April 29, at 2 p.m.
The MAC Championship is slated for Sunday, April 30, at Noon. Live stats will be available for all matches.
