Akron Finishes 12th Overall at Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team climbed one spot on the leaderboard during the final round with a 291 (+3) team effort, finishing the 54-hole event 12th overall with an 874 (+10) tournament total at the 48th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday.
For the third consecutive round, Akron's scoring was led by a different player as junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) fired a team-low 2-under par 70 final round performance. Baylis eagled the 483-yard, par-5 sixth hole and added 11 pars, three birdies, and three bogeys. For the tournament, Baylis played to a 1-over 54-hole score, finishing tied for 34th place with 217 total. He finished the 54-hole event with 26 pars, 13 birdies, 12 bogeys, two double bogeys and an eagle.
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) followed with 219 (+3) tournament performances to finish tied at 48th overall.
Grayson lead the Zips' scoring after the first round and fired three consecutive rounds of 73 (+1). During the final round, Grayson carded eight pars and five birdies mixed with four bogeys and a double bogey. He finished the three-day event with 30 pars, 12 birdies, 10 bogeys, a double, and a triple.
Pfeiffer led the Zips' second round scoring with a tournament-low 3-under 69 score. On the final day of competition, he posted a 76 (+4) effort. For the tournament, Pfeiffer recorded 33 pars, 11 bogeys, eight birdies, a double bogey, and an eagle.
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) carded the final round's second-lowest score, turning in an even-par 72 performance. Gollwitzer eagled hole No. 15, a 524-yard, par-5, to go along with nine pars, three birdies, and five bogeys. He finished the tournament ranked tied for 92nd with a 226 (+10) total.
Rounding out the Zips' scoring was freshman Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio). McFarland recorded rounds of 82 (+10), 73 (+1), and 80 (+8) en route to a 234 (+18) tournament total.
In addition, sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) followed an opening round 72 (E) and a 76 (+4) second round score with a 75 (+3) for a 223 (+7) tournament total, tying for 77th overall while playing as an individual.
Clemson remained in control of the team scoreboard, winning the tournament with a field-low 29-under par 835 tournament total. Clemson's Carson Young moved to the top of the individual leaderboard, climbing three spots during the final round with a 5-under 67 score to claim medalist honors with a 205 (-11) 54-hole total.
Next, the Zips will travel to Charlotte, N.C. for the Irish Creek Intercollegiate at Irish Creek Golf Course on Sunday and Monday, April 9-10.
