SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of Akron track and field team earned six victories as part of 31 overall top-five weekend efforts to round out the Zips' performances at the Roadrunners Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio on Saturday, March 25.
"It was a fun and very competitive meet for the program," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "We were able to accomplish some top marks in the country, including some god wins. This was great start to the outdoor season."
Sophomore Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) eclipsed 17-8.50 (5.40m), the third-best jump in program history, to finish first in the men's pole vault.
Senior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) unleashed a throw of 203-6 (62.04m) to claim the triumph in the men's discus, while posting a mark of 172-4 (52.52m) to place third was junior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio).
The Zips took the top-four finishes in the women's long jump led by a winning mark of 19-9.50 (6.03m) from senior Daniella Johnson (Gahanna, Ohio). Junior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) and seniors Ana Martin-Sacristan (Valencia, Spain) and Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain) followed closely registering marks of 19-7.50 (5.98m), 19-1.50 (5.83m) and 18-10.75 (5.76m), respectively.
Sophomore Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) captured the title in the men's high jump surpassing 7-0.25 (2.14m), while sophomore Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) placed fourth with a mark of 6-6.75 (2.00m).
Junior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) won the men's long jump with a leap of 25-6.25 (7.78m). Finishing close behind with second- and fourth-place efforts in the event was senior Joe Oduho (Erie, Pa.) and redshirt sophomore Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio), who recorded marks of 25-1.25 (7.65m) and 24-2.25 (7.37m), respectively.
Taking home the title in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.71 was sophomore Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio), while Seifring and senior Patricia Ortega (Logrono, Spain) added times of 14.04 (3rd) and 14.20 (4th).
In the 400 meters, Siefring and Dimitra Gnafaki finished second and third with identical times of 60.55.
Senior Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio) and redshirt junior Rebecca Pietsch (Dusseldorf, Germany) eclipsed 12-11.50 (3.95m) and 12-5.50 (3.80m) in the women's pole vault to earn third- and fourth-place finishes.
Placing third, fifth and fifth, respectively, in the women's high jump (5-6/1.68m), discus (151-0/46.04m) and triple jump (40-6.75/12.36m) was sophomores Dajia Mills (Canton, Ohio) and Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) and senior Weronika Gaudyn (Kracow, Poland).
Finishing second and third in the men's triple jump with marks of 49-8.50 (15.15m) and 49-2.25 (14.99m) was seniors Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio) and Jailyn Twitty (Amherst, N.Y.). Twitty's effort represented the fifth-best mark in program history. Additionally, senior Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed fifth in the men's 400 meters with a time of 47.50.
Akron posted fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the men's and women's 4x100 relays. In the men's race, the quartet of senior Hakeem Lawrence (Miami, Fla.), Baldwin, senior Anthony Young (Medina, Ohio) and junior Kwadarrius Smith (Orlando, Fla.) crossed the line in 40.55, while the women's squad of Ramos Gandia, seniors Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio) and Samia Bell (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Stephanie Hale (Cleveland, Ohio) clocked a time of 46.77
As a team, the Zips' men's squad placed third among seven teams with 114 points, finishing 2017 NCAA Indoor Champion Texas A&M (231 points) and host UTSA (147.50). In the women's race, Akron placed third with 116 points, behind only Texas A&M (264 points) and Baylor (145).
Akron returns to competition traveling to Texas to compete in the Texas Relays (March 30-April1) in Austin, Texas, as well as the Bobcat Invitational (March 30-April 1) in San Marcos, Texas.
