TOLEDO, Ohio – The Akron women's tennis team tied a program record with its 15th straight win in a 4-3 victory over Toledo on Friday afternoon at the UT Outdoor Courts.
The Zips improve to 16-2 (1-0 MAC) with the win, while the Rockets fall to 8-6 (0-1 MAC).
Akron also won 15 in a row to start the 2010 season.
"Today was a difficult day overall, with the high winds, hostile and often times inappropriate crowd along with playing our first match outdoors of the year, while Toledo spent a week in Florida not too long ago. That being said, we did a fairly good job of handling the situation. We can certainly get better and we will moving forward," said head coach Brandon Padgett.
Akron clinched the doubles point courtesy of victories from the duos of junior Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas)/senior Karolina Maksimova (Mogilev, Belarus) and junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany)/junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia).
Knezevich/Maksimova, the reigning MAC Doubles Team of the Week, posted a 6-2 win over Toledo's Sidnay Huck/Dee Dee Leenabanchong. Geier/Blinova took a 6-2 decision against the Rockets' duo of Rani Goodland/Mimi Kendall-Woseley.
In No. 1 singles action, Geier toppled Huck in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to capture her 15th straight singles match.
Maksimova registered a 6-1, 6-0 win over Leenabanchong at the No. 4 singles spot for the Zips.
"I'm especially pleased how our top two doubles teams came out and played in such difficult conditions. We played as well as can be expected in singles, but I'm extremely happy with how dominant Karolina and Sophia were today," added Padgett.
Senior Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) got the best of Toledo's Claire Aleck in a three-set win (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) at the No. 6 singles spot.
The Zips return home to host Eastern Michigan on Sunday, March 26, at 1 p.m. at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
