AKRON, Ohio – The Akron women's tennis team will kick off Mid-American Conference play with a pair of matches this weekend.
The Zips will head to Toledo to battle the Rockets on Friday, March 24, at 1 p.m. at either the UT Varsity Tennis Courts or at Shadow Valley Tennis Club depending on weather. On Sunday, March 26, Akron returns home to host Eastern Michigan in a 1 p.m. match at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
UA has won 14 straight matches and sits at 15-2 on the year. A win on Friday would match the school record for consecutive wins.
Toledo has won five straight and is 8-5, while Eastern Michigan enters play at 5-9.
"We are extremely excited to get the conference season underway. This team has worked hard and prepared well up to this point and now it is time for each player to dig a little deeper from within themselves, to fight for each other and for the team as a whole. If each player does that, we will be successful," said head coach Brandon Padgett.
A year ago, Akron registered a 5-2 win over both opponents.
Last weekend, the Zips picked up a 5-2 victory over Milwaukee and took a 7-0 decision against Binghamton.
Junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), the reigning MAC Player of the Week, has won 14 straight singles matches and holds a record of 14-1 this spring.
Freshman Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) has captured 12 consecutive singles matches and is 13-2 this spring.
In doubles action, the duo of junior Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas)/senior Karolina Maksimova (Mogilev, Belarus) was named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week after improving to 13-1 on the season.
