Following an incomplete pass from Woodson to freshman WR Nate Stewart (Akron, Ohio), which was tipped and intercepted, Toledo took advantage of good field position. The Rockets used just three plays to go 36 yards for a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.
Â
Akron opened the second quarter with its first touchdown. On a trick play, Woodson hit a wide open true freshman TE Kobie Booker (Barberton, Ohio) in the endzone, completing an eight-play, 75-yard drive. The Zips pulled within 14 points, 21-7.

In the third quarter, Johnson scored his second TD on the afternoon. This time, he caught a 25-yard pass and surpassed the 100-yard receiving mark for the game. Toledo led, 31-7.
Â
On their next drive, the Zips were short on a third-and-one and went for it on fourth down. With no quarterback, Morgan took a direct snap and rushed two yards for the first down. Three plays later, the Zips turned the ball over on a fumble.
