AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team will participate in the 2017 ITA Midwest Regional Championships, presented by Oracle, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Oct. 12-17.
Hosted by the University of Michigan, the six-day tournament features the top 64 singles players from the Midwest. Only the Top 8 players are seeded. The complete schedule is attached. In a change from past years, the tournament will be held outdoors if weather allows since the national tournament is now an outdoor tournament.
Admission to the event is FREE.
"Regionals is the toughest tournament we will have played during the fall season, but it is an excellent opportunity to continue to challenge our players," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We have a senior, a sophomore, and two freshmen playing this week, so experience certainly isn't on our side, but that is what the fall is all about, gaining experience and developing your game. I'm looking forward to seeing how we play, and will continue to teach our young roster what it takes to be successful at this level."
In Friday's first round of qualifying singles play, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) faces Ohio State's Andrea Ballinger at 10 a.m. Freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) takes on Toledo's Mimi Kendall-Woseley (Toledo) at 11 a.m., while freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) challenges Toledo's Collen O'Brien at11: 45 a.m. Sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) closes out the Zips' first round action against Detroit's Chelsea Apawti at 12:30 p.m.
First round winners advance to the Thursday afternoon's second round action, beginning at 1 p.m.
