AKRON, Ohio—University of Akron junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) has joined the individual national rankings for women's tennis, the first Oracle/ITA Division I National Rankings of the year revealed on Wednesday.
Geier is ranked No. 121 in singles play.
"I'm extremely proud of Sophia for breaking into the national rankings," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "It's a very difficult thing to do, especially at a mid-major school, but her hard work and determination have paid off. Two short summers ago we asked her to completely change her backhand, and to her credit, she trusted us, allowing Brian Peters to work his biomechanics' magic, and this is a direct result of her trust in us. I also attribute Sophia's success to her teammates, as each player has pushed her in some way, be it emotionally, mentally, or physically. Having great teammates and great players around you will only make you better. We saw the same type of team-oriented success with Ariadna (Blinova) last spring, and the amazing results she was able to produce."
The team captain, Geier went 7-1 in singles action last fall. She participated in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in October.
The Zips open their spring slate on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Northwestern. UA's next home match is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 against Oakland and Morgan State at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
"We have a great deal of work to do to produce the type of results we are working towards for this coming spring, and this is a wonderful way to kick things off," he added. "Anytime a player sees this type of success, it is a positive for not only that player, but for the entire team."
