Cleveland, Ohio – ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, has selected the first installment of the Akron-Kent State rivalry game as the Mid-American Conference wildcard game, the league announced on Monday.
The Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge game moved from its original Saturday date to be aired on ESPNU on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. from James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.
The date and time change marks the fourth MAC wildcard selection for the Zips and sixth scheduled game to appear in front of a nationally televised audience, including their second appearance on the ESPN family of networks this season. Akron has appeared in four CBS Sports Network games. The change also guarantees Akron to play 12 televised games this season with three wildcard dates remaining that includes nine different options with five national TV spots and five regional times.
The Zips are currently 18-3 overall with a three-game lead in the MAC at 8-0 in league play. Akron won two non-conference tournaments and is riding an 11-game winning streak while setting new school standard with 28 consecutive wins at James A. Rhodes Arena. The current 11-game run ranks fourth among NCAA Division I programs, while the 28-game streak is the third longest home-court winning streak in the nation.
Akron will look to extend its winning streak to 12 games and its MAC regular season league game-winning streak to 12 games on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. ET. The Zips have won 11-straight regular season MAC games dating back to the 2015-16 season.
