Eleven Zips Earn All-American Track and Field Accolades

2016 NCAA DIVISION I OUTDOOR ALL-AMERICAN RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Akron track and field program reaped the rewards for its efforts during the outdoor campaign this season as 11 Zips garnered United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America citations.
Collecting first-team recognition for the Zips were seniors Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain) and Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) and junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio)
Earning second-team honors for Akron was sophomore Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio), senior Joe Oduho (Erie, Pa.), sophomore Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) and freshmen Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) and Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio).
Tabbed as honorable mention selections was junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio), senior Alex McCune (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio).
"Having 11 in one year is a great honor for our program and tribute to the dedication of these student-athletes," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "All-American is a big deal in our sport. They will be forever known as All-Americans."
Murphy captured his first-ever NCAA Outdoor title on June 10, at the NCAA Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Ore., registering a school-record time of 3:36.38 to win the men's 1,500 meters and in the process his second overall NCAA championship to become a four-time All-American.
Garcia Jou earned first-team recognition for the fourth time in her distinguished Akron career finishing tied for third in the women's high jump (June 11) with a mark of 5-11.75 (1.82m).
Taking home first-team accolades for the first time was Hasse, who placed seventh in the women's pole vault on June 9, eclipsing 13-9.25 (4.20m), to become a three-time All-America honoree.
McClain finished 10th in the men's long jump on June 8 with a mark of 24-6.50 (7.48m) to collect second-team All-America honors for the first time.
Richardson and Stine capped stellar freshmen campaigns placing 13th in the men's high jump surpassing 6-10.25 (2.09m) to collect their first All-America citations, respectively.
Sparked by winning the final event of the heptathlon to place 12th overall with a cumulative score of 5,626, Siefring was tabbed a second-team All-America recipient.
Additionally, Jagers, McCune and Rowland were awarded honorable mention All-Americans after their performances in the discus, decathlon and pole vault.
