AKRON, Ohio - A pair of University of Akron track and field team standouts have been tabbed by Track and Field News as favorites to capture titles at the upcoming NCAA Track and Field Championships, June 8-11, in Eugene, Ore.
Junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) was selected as the favorite to claim the men's 1,500-meter title, while senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain) was projected to win the women's high jump.
Murphy advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 1,500 meters after posting the top time (3:43.43) at the NCAA East Regional. Murphy is unbeaten this spring having competed in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters, respectively, as well as the 4x400 relay.
Garcia Jou earned her fourth career NCAA Championship berth surpassing 5-10.75 (1.80m) at the NCAA East Regional.
Additionally, junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) was tabbed to place third in the men's discus.
Jagers qualified for the finals of the discus after registering a school-record throw (205-9) at the NCAA East Regional. The mark represented the second-best throw nationally this spring and was tops amongst both regional sites.
