Awendaw, S.C. – The Akron Zips men's golf team opened the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate with a 296 (+8) team score, placing 11^th overall.

Charleston Southern holds a four-stroke lead over the 15-team field with an 15-under par 273 opening round performance behind Taylor Zoller's tournament-leading 8-under, 64-stroke effort.

Senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) fired a 1-under par 71 to lead the Zips' scoring. Birchall opened the round with three-straight pars before carding his first birdie. He recorded a second birdie on the seventh hole for a 2-under par score, however, finished the front nine with an even scorecard after a pair of bogeys. On the back, Birchall continued to play even-par golf until he made birdie on the 14^th hole. He remained 1-under through the final four holes to finish 18^th overall with 13 pars, three birdies, and two bogeys.

Freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) completed the initial 18-hole round with a 1-over 73 tally. Grayson fell one stroke back on the second hole with a bogey, but evened the scorecard on hole 5 with a birdie. He made a second birdie on 10, but followed with a bogey on 12 and registered a third bogey on 16 to finish 30^th overall with 13 pars, three bogeys, and two birdies.

Senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) and sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) are tied at 52^nd overall with a pair of 76 (+4) scores. Harris notched 12 pars, three bogeys, two birdies and a triple-bogey while Williams tallied 11 pars, four bogeys, two birdies and a double-bogey.

Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) currently ranks 67^th with a 78 (+6) 18-hole round that included 13 pars, four bogeys, and a double-bogey.

Second round action begins Monday at 9 a.m. ET. The Zips are scheduled to tee off on hole No. 10 from 9 to 9:40 a.m. ET.
