Zips Climb the Leaderboard, Baylis Enters Top 5 at the MAC Championship

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Akron Zips climbed one spot in the team rankings with a 289 (+5) team score fueled by a 3-under par 68 stroke performance from sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England). The Zips moved to fifth overall at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship with an 892 (+40) total after starting Friday's third round with a 603 (+35) at the par 71, 6,712-yard Highland Meadows Golf Club.
"I'm proud of how our team played today," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "We are looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow."
Baylis entered the third round as the Zips' low-scorer and continued that trend by carding 13 pars, four birdies and a bogey. With the 3-under par performance, Baylis moved inside the Top 5 on the leaderboard, jumping eight spots to a tie for fourth place with a 216 (+3) 54-hole total.
Freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a 72 (+1) effort. He climbed six positions on the leaderboard to finish 16th overall with a 224 (+11) three-round tally. Grayson recorded 13 pars, three bogeys and two birdies.
Junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) maintained his 15th overall position with a 73 (+2) round. Pfeiffer cut two strokes off Thursday's first and second round totals for a 223 (+10) two-day tally.
Senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) and junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) rounded out the scoring with 76 (+5) and 82 (+11) third-round scores, respectively. Harris currently stands at 28th overall with a 229 (+16) while Williams is 44th with a 240 (+27) tournament total.
After 54 holes of play, Kent State leads the tournament with an 864 (+12) team total while Eastern Michigan is second overall with a 879 (+27) score.
Northern Illinois' Joo-Young Lee leads the individual scoring, firing rounds of 72 (+1), 67 (-4), and 73 (+2) for a tournament-low 212 (-1) total. Eastern Michigan's Brett White is second overall with a 214 (+1) while Kent State's Ian Holt ranks third with a 215 (+2) tournament total.
The final round of the MAC Championship is scheduled to start at 7:45 a.m. ET on Saturday. Akron will tee off at 8:30 a.m. ET on the first tee, beginning with Williams and followed by Harris (8:39), Grayson (8:48), Pfeiffer (8:57), and Baylis (9:06).
