Zips Ranked Sixth After 36 Holes at MAC Championship

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Akron Zips finished the initial two rounds of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championship ranked sixth with a 603 (+35) team score. The Zips opened the event with a 302 (+18) and fired a second-round 301 (+17) at the par 71, 6,712-yard Highland Meadows Golf Club on Thursday.
"We made some mistakes and didn't capitalize on some opportunities, but there is a lot of golf left," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "We look forward to the final 36 holes."
Starting on the 10th tee both rounds, the Zips ended the first 18 holes in a tie for fifth place with Northern Illinois at 18-over par (302), while Eastern Michigan and Kent State shared the lead with 4-over par 288 first-round team scores.
Leading the Zips through the cold and rainy conditions were senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) and junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France). Both, Harris and Pfeiffer, recorded 75 (+4) opening round scores, placing 14th overall.
Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) and freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with 76 (+5) scores and ranked 20th overall, while and junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) rounded out the first-round scoring with an 80 (+9) tally for 37th place.
During the second round of the MAC season finale, Baylis emerged as the Zips' leading scorer. He completed the second 18 holes with a 1-over par 72 en route to a 11th place 148 (+6) score.
Pfeiffer and Grayson mirrored their first-round performances with a 75 (+4) and 76 (+5), respectively. Pfeiffer currently ranks 15th overall with a 150 (+8) total while Grayson's 152 (+10) total ranks 22nd overall.
Harris followed a team-low 75 (+4) with a 78 (+7) for a 25th place 153 (+11) two-round total while Williams cut two strokes from his first round, carding a 78 (+7) for a 38th-best 158 (+16).
After 36 holes of play, Kent State leads the tournament with a 579 (+11) team total while Eastern Michigan is second overall with a 583 (+15) score. Northern Illinois' Joo-Young Lee leads the individual scoring, firing rounds of 72 (+1) and 67 (-4) for a tournament-low 139 (-3) total. Eastern Michigan's Brett White held the initial lead 66 (-5) after 18 holes, but fell to second overall with a 75 (+4) for a 141 (-1).
The Zips will be back in action for rounds three and four on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Akron will tee off at 9:15 a.m. ET on the first tee, beginning with Williams and followed by Harris (9:24), Grayson (9:33), Pfeiffer (9:42), and Baylis (9:51).
