Aiken, S.C. – The University of Akron men's golf team fired rounds of 290 and 301 for a 591 36-hole total on the first day of competition at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken on Monday. The Zips are tied with Idaho at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Course heading into the final round.
The Zips were tied for 7th in team scoring with Furman after the initial 18 holes with a 290 (+10) score. However, on the second 18-hole round Akron added 11 strokes to the total, finishing 31-over for the day.
Akron was led by sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England), carding 74 (+4) and 73 (+3) for a 147 (+7). He is currently tied for 38th overall on the leaderboard. Freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a 47th-best 148 stroke total after earning an even-par score on the initial 18 holes and posting an 8-over 78 in the second round. Senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) recorded rounds of 74 (+4) and 75 (+5) for a 9-over 149 36-hole total (56th overall) while Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), and junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) rounded out the scoring with 152 stroke totals. Williams posted scores of 72 (+2) and 80 (+10), and Pfeiffer shot 77 (+7) and 75 (+5) to finish tied at 76th overall.
Akron is scheduled to start the final round at holes 13-15, teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
