MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK RELEASE
CLEVELAND, Ohio - University of Akron track and field standouts junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) and redshirt junior Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio) were tabbed by the Mid-American Conference as the MAC Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday, March 29.
Murphy was named the MAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week after garnering a first-place performance in the men's 1,500 meter to direct the efforts of the Zips' track and field team on the opening day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 25.
In his first race since capturing an NCAA title in the 800 meters on March 12, Murphy led all runners in the 1,500 meters crossing the line in 3:44.57. His effort represented the third-best time in the country this spring.
Ohiembor was selected as the MAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week after recording a school-record mark in the men's triple jump at the Ricardo Romo Invitational on Saturday, March 26.
Ohiembor soared 51-1.50 (15.58m) to break his own school-record mark of 50-8.75 set at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships on May 16, 2015.
The performance also represented the ninth-longest jump in the country this spring.
The accolades are the first of the outdoor campaign for Akron, while representing the 11th and 12th individual awards, respectively, for a Zip in 2016.
Akron returns to action this Thursday through Saturday, March 31-April 2, traveling to Austin, Texas, to compete at the Texas Relays.
