Greenville, S.C. – Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) and senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) both used under par performances to lead the Akron Zips men's golf team to a 290 (+2) team tally and sixth-place tie after the opening round of the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday. Baylis carded a 4-under par 68 at the 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course while Harris turned in a 3-under par 69 effort.
Baylis currently ranks third overall and one-shot behind a two-way tie for the lead. He pared six holes and fired a pair of birdies on the front nine to finish 1-under with 35 strokes. On the back nine, Baylis registered six more pars and recorded two eagles for a 33 (-3), tying his career-best 18-hole performance.
Harris is tied for fourth overall and finished the first 9-holes at 2-under with 34 strokes, using seven pars and two birdies. After the turn, Harris recorded six pars and two birdies with a bogey for a 1-under 35 back-nine score. The 69 stroke total was his second-best 18-hole effort this year.
Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), and senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) rounded out the Zips scoring. Williams finished the initial 18-holes with a 76 (+4) stroke performance while Grayson recorded a 77 (+5) effort. Birchall wrapped up Akron's round with a 79 (+7) 18-hole score.
Harvard leads the 19-team field with a 284 (-4) first-round team total while Wofford's Andrew Novak and Marshall's Logan Lagodich each recorded 67 (-5) scores to top the leaderboard.
