Zips Host Detroit in Lone Match Weekend

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team plays host to Detroit on Saturday, March 12 for a 10 a.m. match at the Outdoor Tennis Facility.
Akron opened the 2015-16 season with an 8-1 record but has dropped three of its last four matches. The Zips defeated St. Bonaventure 6-1 (Mar. 1) before falling to East Tennessee State 5-2 (Mar. 4), No. 66 Winthrop 6-0 (Mar. 5) and Cleveland State 4-3 (Mar. 9).
Against CSU, sophomores Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) both defeated their opponents to claim their tenth victory of the season. Blinova bested Cleveland State's Mathilde Orange, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot while Geier overpowered Isabella Spindler, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. At No. 6 singles, freshman Luisa Echeverry also beat CSU's Jana Schober, 6-3, 6-0.
Detroit (1-4) fell to Bowling Green, 5-2, in its season opener before dropping two matches against Western Michigan and Ball State. The Titans took a 5-2 victory versus Northwestern on Feb. 27 but most recently gave up a 5-2 decision to Toledo.
The last time these two teams met was when Akron defeated Detroit, 5-2, on Feb. 16, 2009.
Akron will prepare for a three-match road swing starting at Tulane on Saturday, March 19. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
