WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Senior Alice Hottensmith (Brunswick, Ohio) qualified for the NCAA Championships in the one-meter dive on day one of the NCAA Zone "C" diving competition after posting a score of 545.75 for 10th place.
"I could not be happier for Alice and all that she has accomplished, not only this year but in her four year career. I am excited to see what she can do at the NCAA Championships," said the 2016 Mid-American Conference diving Coach of the Year Chris Medvedeff. "Tomorrow is the three-meter event and we are ready to go in and compete, make a splash, and hopefully get another qualifying score."
Out of the 18 competitors competing in the finals portion of the event, only 12 moved on to the NCAA Championships.
Hottensmith's score of 545.75 is a combined score from the preliminary round (274.30) and her finals round score of (270.45).
Junior Paige Kelkenbrg (Lockport, N.Y.) found herself in the final round of 18 with a preliminary score of 265.30. In the finals round, the junior concluded the day with a 519.70 for 18th place.
This is the first time in program history that Akron has qualified a diver for the NCAA Championship.
The senior has been spectacular all year, and recently placed second in the one-meter (299.50) and three-meter (303.75) events at the 2016 MAC Championships. Kelkenberg also had a great year on the boards and took home fourth in the one-meter (288.45) and 10th in the three-meter (296.30) at MAC's.
The NCAA Zone "C" diving competition continues tomorrow, March 11, with the women's three-meter event.
