Men's Basketball Closes Gap on Women's Soccer Lead in Inaugural Alumni Student-Athlete Giving Challenge

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's basketball program has closed in on women's soccer in the inaugural Alumni Student-Athlete Giving Challenge. In the second standings update for the giving challenge, hosted by the Department of Athletics, Varsity "A" Association, and Z-Fund, women's soccer holds onto the lead. Men's basketball, men's soccer, football, and volleyball round out the top five.

The fundraising competition officially kicked off during the 2016 All-Sport Homecoming Reunion and will continue until the end of the calendar year. The Alumni Student-Athlete Giving Challenge pits all 18 Akron athletics teams against each other to determine which program can have the highest percentage of former student-athletes give back to their respective program. The program that gets the highest percentage of alumni student-athlete participation will earn a cash award for their respective team. The winner will be crowned after December 31, 2016.
Any gifts of $35 or more made after or on January 1, 2016, and designated to an athletics fund will count toward the Giving Challenge. Support for the athletics programs helps sustain the teams year-round by providing current student-athletes with the resources they need to operate and compete at a high level.
The 2015-16 year was one of the best all-around performances for Zips' Athletics; our 450 student-athletes attained a 3.067 cumulative GPA, won five Mid-American Conference team championships, earned 27 MAC individual championships, and collected the Reese Trophy for best men's athletics program in the MAC, just to name a few accomplishments.
