AKRON, Ohio - The Akron men's and women's track and field teams will open their indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips will participate in a pair of meets this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16.
Akron will send a delegation of pole vaulters to Reno, Nev., to compete at the National Pole Vault Summit, while the remainder of the squad will travel to University Park, Pa., to partake in the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Scheduled to compete for Akron at the National Pole Vault Summit on the men's side is freshmen Adam Alexander (Tiffin, Ohio) and Tyler Fraker (Delta, Ohio), senior Alex McCune (Pittsburgh, Pa.), junior Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio) and freshmen Ben Waterman (Prospect, Ohio) and Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio).
In the women's competition, scheduled to participate for the Zips will be freshman Mackenzie Brown (Dublin, Ohio), Roxanne Dunn (Dover, Ohio) and Eboni Hall (Pickerington, Ohio), redshirt junior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany), freshman Rebecca Pietsch (Dusseldorf, Germany) and junior Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio).
The balance of the Akron squad will participate at the Nittany Lion Challenge, which will feature the Zips going against a field that features nine teams, including; Akron, Binghamton, Connecticut, Cornell, Georgetown, Miami (Fla.), Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
Competition gets underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, with the women's weight throw followed by running events beginning at 10:45 a.m. with the mixed one mile run. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400 relay, which is schedule for 5:50 p.m.
