Men's Golf Opens Season at The Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team will open the 2015-16 season on Friday, Sept. 11, at The Invitational on the 7,115-yard, par-72, Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The 54-hole event features a 12-team field, highlighted by seven Golfstat Top 100 teams, including No. 32 UAB, No. 44 NC State, No. 48 Georgia Southern, No. 59 Troy, No. 63 Kentucky, No. 72 Georgia State, host and No. 87 College of Charleston. Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, Francis Marion, and Lamar will also join the Zips.
The first two rounds are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11, beginning with a round-one shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET. Round two will follow as continuous play.
The final round is slated to begin Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the two-day event live via Golfstat Live Scoring.
"I'm looking forward to the 2015-16 season," Zips head coach David Trainor said. "I am excited about our team, and we have worked hard to this point. Now it is the time to see how we fare. It will be a great test against great competition."
Akron returns eight players and a redshirt freshman from last season, led by seniors Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) and Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.). Both Birchall and Harris competed at The Invitational in 2012, finishing seventh as a team with individual low-round scores of 74 (+2) and 76 (+4), respectively. In addition, Birchall posted the team's 2014-15 lowest scoring average at 75.15 (33 rounds), while Harris was fourth on the scoring list with a 75.53 avg. (30 rounds).
The Zips return four juniors in Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.), Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), and Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.). Pfeiffer finished the 2014-15 season with a second-best 75.43 scoring average (28 rounds). Also available for the UA's 2015-16 squad are redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and freshman Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland).
