AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's soccer team led by senior Katie George (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) remain undefeated following four goals in the second half against Cleveland State in a 4-2 victory over the Vikings on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
The first 45 minutes of the game saw little action as Akron recorded three shots, while Cleveland State was unable to get a shot off.
George recorded the first shot of the game in the 17' when freshman Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) crossed the ball into the box, George put a soft touch on it, but it was immediately blocked.
Nine minutes into the second half, junior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) was fouled inside the box. Sivic set up for Akron's first penalty kick of the year. She sent the shot past the goalkeeper as she dove right for her first goal of the season.
George scored her first goal of the night and third of the season at the 62:46 mark. Sivic sent a free kick from just outside the top of the box that was saved by the goalkeeper. George grabbed the rebound off of the save and put the ball in the back of the net.
Junior Karin Norman (Stocksund, Sweden) put the Zips ahead of the Vikings 3-0 in the 78' of the match. Sivic passed the ball to Norman just out of reach of the defender in the right side of the box. Normin collected herself, shot the ball and picked up her first goal of her collegiate career.
Cleveland State's Allie Sieradzki took away the opportunity for Akron to tally their third shutout of the year. Following a foul inside the box, Sieradzki sent a penalty shot passed junior goalie Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) in the 78'.
The goal was the first goal allowed by Hegeman on the year.
George was not done for the night after her first goal. At the 78:05 mark, George ripped a shot from 50 yards away and the keeper was unable to make a play giving Akron a 4-1 lead with 12 minutes to play.
The Vikings put another score on the board before the night was through. In the 87' minute of play Kaila Sargema scored her third goal of the year to cut the Akron lead to 4-2.
The Zips out shot the Vikings 23-8, 20 of those shots came in the second half alone. Ten of Akron's 23 shots were on goal.
George is now the leading scorer for Akron with four goals on the year. Sivic recorded her first two assists of the season along with her goal.
Hegeman made one save between the posts for Akron. The four goals given up by CSU goalie Jamie Daniels were the most given up on the year.
