SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - University of Akron sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) capped another successful international race crossing the line in the 800 meters at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships (NACAC) in 1:46.38 to earn a silver medal for the United States on Sunday, Aug. 9, in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Ryan Martin of the United States captured gold in the race registering a meet-record time of 1:45.79.
"It was great for the United States to go one-two today," Akron head coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Clayton took it out pretty fast leading for most the race, although he was not able to hold on. However, as he keeps pushing the pace it is going to help him get better and better down the road. What a great year for him."
Murphy is the top alternate in the 800 meters at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships to be run Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China. The USA Track and Field Association (USATF) will release rosters for the United States on Monday, Aug. 10.
Murphy and the Zips will open Akron's 2015 cross country schedule with the Tommy Evans Invitational on Sept. 10.
