EUGENE, Ore. – University of Akron senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and redshirt sophomore Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) each garnered All-America status on the strength of their respective efforts for the Zips' Track and Field team at the NCAA Track and Field Championship on Thursday, June 11, in Eugene, Ore.
Cooks opened the women's competition for the Zips turning in a 12th-place finish in the hammer with a throw of 196-7. Her effort came on her first throw and enabled Cooks to earn second-team All-America accolades.
She returned to the track later in the afternoon to compete in the women's shot put, where on the strength of shattering her own school record, Cooks placed eighth with a career-best mark of 55-1. She garnered first-team All-America honors to become a five-time All-American.
In the women's pole vault, Hasse cleared her opening height surpassing 13-3.50 (4.05m) on her first attempt.
Hasse was unable to surpass 13-9.25 (4.20m) on her first two runs at the height before eclipsing the mark on her third and final attempt. The effort matched her career-best jump at the Mt. Sac Relays on April 17, which stands as the fourth-highest clearance in program history.
Hasse couldn't soar past 14-1.25 (4.30m) to set a new career-best mark as she was not able to clear the height on each of her three attempts. Her performance garnered a 12th-place finish and second-team All-America laurels. In 2014, she was named an honorable mention All-American.
The final day of men's competition occurs on Friday, June 12, as sophomore Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) will compete in the first of two flights in the men's discus at 7:05 p.m. ET. Jagers set a school record in the event with a throw of 188-1 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 29. At 8:50 p.m. ET, sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) will take to the track in the finals of the men's 800 meters.
