YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Redshirt junior infielder Gerrad Rohan issued a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate to rake in a pair of RBI on Wednesday, leading the University of Akron baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Youngstown State at Eastwood Field.
Freshman starter Josh Lapiana picked up his second-straight win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Lapiana walked one and fanned four. His record improved to 2-3 with the win.
Junior infielder Billy Salem went 3-for-5 at the dish with an RBI while sophomore catcher Brian Lees went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Dom Iero collected the Zips' fourth RBI and a pair of hits.
Akron (21-22) got on the board in the top of the first inning on two-out RBI singles from Salem and Rohan for a 2-0 lead. The pair plated Lees and junior designated hitter Daulton Mosbarger who reached on a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively.
Youngstown State (13-26) matched Akron with two runs off three hits in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 2-all.
The teams traded scoreless frames over the next three innings until Akron plated its second pair of runs off four-straight singles in the top of the fifth for the 4-2 result.
The Zips recorded at least two hits in four of the first five innings en route to out-hitting the Penguins, 14-11.
Akron left 12 on base and posted an error to YSU's nine left on base and no errors.
Senior Reliever Pat Dyer tossed 2.0 scoreless innings and was followed by junior reliver Zach Beaver who picked up his first save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth and striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The Zips return to action this weekend when they travel to take on Bowling Green for a three-game Mid-American Conference set. The series begins on Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. and continues with 1 p.m. games on both Saturday and Sunday.
