GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ryan Harris and Yann Pfeiffer sit inside the top 20 as the Akron men's golf team opened the 46th Annual Furman Intercollegiate in a tie for fourth place on Friday at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Harris posted a round of 1-under 71 to close play in a tie for ninth place, four shots off the lead. Pfeiffer is tied for 20th place after posting an even-par 72.
As a team, the Zips posted a score of 2-over 290 and is tied with Georgia State. The round was the lowest for Akron during the spring schedule and is tied for the fourth-lowest this season. The Zips closed the day 10-under on the par-5s, tied for the top mark of the day. Both Harris and Pfeiffer helped that total by posting identical 4-under scores on the course's four par-5s.
USC Aiken, the No. 2 team in the nation in the Division II rankings, leads the field after posting a first-round 284 (-4).
Louis Birchall is tied for 30th place after firing a 1-over 73 while George Baylis closed play in a tie for 44th place. Baylis carded a round of 2-over 74 as Akron's top-four players finished just four shots apart.
Zach Gollwitzer rounded out the scoring-five in a tie for 100th place after shooting a 9-over 81.
The Zips will open the second round on Saturday, with tee times set to begin at 8 a.m. ET from the first tee. Fans can follow the action live via Golfstat Live Scoring.
