Akron Baseball Drops Home Opener to YSU, 8-7

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team dropped its home opener to Youngstown State, 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips fell to 10-11 overall, while the Penguins improved to 5-11 overall.
"I'm disappointed in our execution both on the mound and at the plate," head coach Rick Rembielak said. "There were a few at-bats we just threw away."
Youngstown jumped on the scoreboard first with three runs in the top of the first. Akron responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Redshirt junior Gerrad Rohan singled to down the left field line, bringing in redshirt senior Joey Havrilak, who reached on a single, and junior Daulton Mosbarger, who walked. While Rohan was tagged out en route to second, junior Kris Simonton stole home to tie the game.
Akron went ahead by one in the bottom of the second as redshirt freshman Mason Mamarella came home on a wild pitch.
The Zips took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third as Rohan had a two-out RBI double to left field, bringing in Simonton, who reached on a walk.
Youngstown came within one with a run in the top of the fifth and reclaimed the lead, 6-5, in the sixth with two runs.
In the bottom of the eighth, Akron went up, 7-6, as senior Matt Rembielak nailed a two RBI single to center field, scoring Billy Salem and Mamarella.
The Penguins took the lead for good in the top of the ninth with two runs, 8-7. Akron threatened during the final three outs but couldn't convert.
Mamarella led the Zips at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple.
On the mound, sophomore Josh Davis hurled 5.0 innings, striking out a career-high nine batters and walking three in his first start. Sophomore Evan Jensen (0-1) took the loss. He threw 1.0 innings, walking two and fanning one.
Overall, Youngstown out-hit Akron, 13-11. Both teams committed one fielding error.
Akron travels to Ohio State on Wednesday, March 25, for a 5:05 p.m. game. BTN Plus will carry the game.
