Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight with 6-1 Victory at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team captured its fourth consecutive victory with a 6-1 win at Youngstown State on Tuesday afternoon at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Zips improved to 4-1 overall, while the Penguins fell to 2-3 overall.
Playing singles action first, Akron won five of six matches. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Karolina Maksimava (Mogliev, Belarus) defeated Dominika Lackova, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) beat Annina Brendel, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to remain undefeated this spring.
In doubles action, Akron won two of three matches to claim the team point. At No. 1 doubles, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) and Maksimava beat Annina Brendel and Nehel Sahni, 6-3.
"I am extremely pleased with the way we came out and fought today," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Doubles was nice to see, with a few new combinations that really worked well. I hope we can carry this momentum into our matches this weekend."
Akron returns home to host NJIT on Friday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. and Liberty on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
