Akron set to host Zips Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - In its final preparation for the upcoming Mid-American Conference Championship, Feb. 27-28, the nationally-ranked Akron men's and women's track and field teams return to the track at the Stile Athletics Field House this Friday, Feb. 20, to host the Zips Invitational.
Akron will battle Youngstown State in a scored dual meet with the first of 28 events getting underway at 7 p.m. and running through the men's and women's 4x400 relays that are scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door for $6 (cash only). Akron students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. All fans should enter through the Akron student recreation center main entrance.

The Akron men's squad owns a program-best No. 14 national ranking in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Monday, Feb. 16. The Zips' women's team is rated 16th.
Akron men's and women's squads finished the indoor campaign ranked seventh and 19th, respectively, in the final men's and women's collegiate dual meet rankings of 2015, as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
Akron currently has eight student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including junior Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) and senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain), who own the top marks nationally in the men's pole vault (19-4.25) and women's high jump (6-2), respectively.
Also rated among the top-25 are seniors Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) (fifth in weight throw/71-1.5 and 19th in shot put/53-3.75), Brittany Funk (Jeromesville, Ohio) (seventh in weight throw/70-11.25), freshman Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (11th in long jump/25-2.75 and 20th in heptathlon/5,394), sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) (14th in 800 meters/1:48.36), senior Claire Lucas (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) (20th in pole vault/13-9) and senior Skyler Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) (25th in pentathlon/3,877).
