Baseball Adds Matt Burns as Volunteer Assistant Coach
September 08 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio – Matthew Burns has joined the University of Akron baseball team as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rick Rembielak announced earlier this week.
On the addition, Rembielak said, "We were searching for a quality guy to join us and especially work with our catchers. Matt will help in all phases and each coach I spoke with said the same things about how good he's been for them both as a player and as a coach. We are very pleased to have Matt as a Zip!"
Burns comes to northeast Ohio after spending one season as an assistant coach at New Paltz State University of New York where he assisted the head coach in developing the New Paltz recruiting philosophy, including on and off campus.
In Aug. 2012, Burns served as an assistant coach at Bard College, where he was in charge of hitting development and catching defense. Along with helping players improve their game, Burns also visited several states across the country recruiting players for Bard's program.
Prior to that, Burns was an assistant coach in the summer of 2012 with the PGCBL Watertown Wizards. There, he helped coach players from across Division I to Division III schools. Seven players were named to the PGCBL All-Star Game under Burns' advisement.
Burns started his coaching career at SUNY Oneonta College in Oneonta, N.Y. in 2012 as an assistant coach as well as the recruiting coordinator.
A graduate of Plattsburgh State in Plattsburg, N.Y., where he was a four-year varsity letterman, Burns received a B.A./M.S. for Teachers in 2011. In 2010, Burns was a part of the first nationally ranked squad in program history and finished with a single season team record 30 wins.
