Geier & Newnes Compete at Notre Dame Invitational
September 26 | Women's Tennis
SOUTH BEND, Ind.— Two Zips women's tennis players had a tough day in the opening round of the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.
Freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) opened tournament play with an 8-0 loss to No. 2 seed Nicky Stracar and Ipek Birol from Tulane.
In their second doubles match, Geier and Newnes dropped an 8-1 decision to Louisville's Olivia Boesing and Aleksandra Mally.
In singles action, Newnes lost to Tulane's Kyla Klier, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, while Geier fell to Illinois' Emily Barreta, 6-0, 6-4.
"Today was a tough day, but we knew what we were getting into when we agreed to come to this tournament," UA head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Doubles was definitely a struggle today, but we saw some excellent things in singles that we will continue to build upon. We get the chance to come right back tomorrow and see if we can improve upon today."
The action was the first for Newnes this fall. Geier played in last weekend's Akron Shootout, going 1-2 in singles action and 1-2 in doubles action with freshman partner Maria Bessmertnaya (Pyatigosk, Russia).
Competition on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Notre Dame Invitational begins at 10 a.m. with two rounds doubles action before singles play.
