September 19 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio - In its first game action since taking the field this past May for the Mid-American Conference Championship game, the University of Akron baseball team opens up its fall exhibition schedule this Friday when the Zips take on the Ontario Nationals at Lee R. Jackson Field.
In an exhibition game last fall against the Toronto Mets, the Zips posted two five-run rallies in both the seventh and eighth innings and scattered 25 hits, including six doubles and one home run, to claim a 21-6 victory. Seven of the different Akron pitchers used did not allow a hit in the win. Returning players Matt LaRocca and JT Brubaker led the team with two strikeouts each on the mound while Kris Simonton went 3-for-5 and picked up four runs scored, a team high.
As fall practices are in session, the Zips next return to game action during the Blue/Gold World Series, scheduled to start on Friday, Oct. 17 and include five games spanning the following six days.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
