AKRON, Ohio - Facing the College Cup Championship runner-up from just one season ago, the University of Akron men's soccer team lost 3-0 to the Maryland Terrapins on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field.
In front of 1,589 fans at home, the Zips were unable to make an impact on the offensive end of the field, taking just five shots in the match. Junior Clint Caso and freshman Richie Laryea were the lone UA players to come through with a shot on goal, the team's only two on the night. Akron last took five or less shots in a game last November when they defeated West Virginia at home 3-0, needing only five shots to do so.
The Terrapins offense, on the other hand, got on a hot streak in the middle of the first half, scoring three goals in a span of just 10 minutes and 26 seconds.
David Kabelik took a pass from teammate Mael Corboz in the 18th minute from the right side that netted Maryland their first goal of the game.
Corboz would find a chance to increase that lead in the 21st minute as we was tackled in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Going to the left side, junior goalkeeper Jake Fenlason's right, Corboz squeezed the ball by the low post despite Fenlason guessing correctly, giving the Terrapins a 2-0 lead.
Kabelik, with only four points on two goals in 2013, would strike again in the 29th minute, receiving a ball just in front of the goal and heading it into Fenlason's chest. Quickly rebounding it, Kabelik connected on a one touch shot right past the fallen Fenlason.
The Zips held their own for the remainder of the game, as Maryland managed just three shots in the second half. Both teams used a wealth of substitutions, as Akron showcased 21 total players while the Terrapins used 23.
With a front line missing its top four goalscorers from a year ago, freshmen Sam Gainford, Stuart Holthusen, and Nate Shultz were given starts on the attacking end for Akron. With all three failing to produce in the first half, the Zips came out in the second half with six new players compared to their starting lineup, hoping to find a spark.
Fenlason made five saves on the night for Akron, playing all 90 minutes.
The Zips take on Syracuse this Friday, Aug. 22 at home for their second and final exhibition game. That match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
