CARMEL, Ind. – Charlie Bull and Ryan Harris posted top-five finishes as the Akron Zips tied the school record for best team finish at the Mid-American Conference Championship, closing the day in second place on Sunday.
Bull and Harris became just the second pair of Zips to earn First-Team All-MAC honors, joining Blake Sattler and Brad Wright, (2007). The pair also earned a spot on the MAC All-Tournament team after finishing in third and fourth, respectively.
"Huge congrats to Charlie and Ryan on earning First-Team All-MAC and All-Tournament team honors," head coach David Trainor said. "Both players are extremely deserving of these accolades. I want to give a special thanks to Charlie for all the hard work and dedication he put in over the last four years. It has been a pleasure to coach him and watch him grow."
The Zips posted a round of 2-over 290 on Sunday to finish with a 72-hole score of 1,165 (+13). Akron's second-place finished tied the program mark for best finish at the MAC Championship (2007) while the Zips posted the third-lowest total score at the MAC Championship event in school history.
"I cannot put into words how proud I am of this team," Trainor said. "We played great on Friday, struggled slightly during difficult conditions on Saturday and got off to a less than stellar start today. These guys fought hard, playing the last seven holes at 6-under par, to conclude a gutsy performance."
Kent State won its sixth-straight MAC championship, ended the weekend with a score of 3-over 1,155. Corey Conners, also of Kent State, won the individual title with a 72-hole tally of 11-under 277.
For a third-consecutive season, Bull finished inside the top-five, ending play alone in third place with a four-round score of 284 (-4). Bull now owns two of the top four individual finishes in program history at the MAC Championship (3rd in 2013) and his total score of 284 is tied for the second-lowest by a Zip in program history (Greg Boyette, 1998). He is just the third three-time First-Team All-MAC player in school history, the second to do so in consecutive years (Boyette, 1996-98).
Harris ended play with a four-round score of even-par 288 after posting a final-round 74 (+2). The All-MAC and All-Tournament selections were the first for Harris as he is just the seven players in program history, including Bull, to finish the MAC Championship at even-par or better.
Freshmen J.B. Williams and Zach Gollwitzer had solid showings in their first championship experience, posting top-25 finishes. Williams had the second-lowest round of the day, firing a 3-under 69 to finish tied for 17th place (299, +11).
Gollwitzer finished in a tie for 21st place with a total score of 300 (+12) after posting a final-round 77 (+5). Louis Birchall rounded out the scoring-five in 39th place (311, +23) after his round of 82 (+10).
The Zips will now wait to see if they have earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regionals. The NCAA Regionals selection show will air live on Monday, May 5, at 10 a.m. ET on the Golf Channel.
Bull, who earned a spot as an individual at the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Central Regionals, will look to make a third-straight appearance. He finished tied for 25th last year and tied for 19th in 2012.
