AKRON, Ohio -- Jessica Schneider was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored twice as the Zips used a pair of three-run innings to defeat Western Michigan, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Akron took a 3-1 lead after the first inning and would never trail after that, improving to 26-14 overall and 11-6 in the Mid-American Conference with the win. Western Michigan falls to 17-33 and 8-13 in the league.
The Zips used an efficient offensive attack, scoring their six runs on nine hits. Shawna Mailloux turned in a multi-hit effort that included a double, while Kellie Roudabush and McKenzi Rhodes each chipped in two RBI.
Erin Seiler (19-7) threw all seven innings in the circle, giving up six hits and just one walk. Aside from the two scoring innings for Western Michigan, Seiler did not allow a WMU baserunner past first base on the day.
The Broncos got on the board quickly in the top of the first courtesy of a two-out RBI single. Akron would not stay scoreless for long however, taking full advantage of its first at-bats. Four different Zips tallied a hit in the first inning, including three straight singles from Schneider, Roudabush and Erin Pond, to put UA up 3-1 after the opening frame.
Western made it a one-run ball game in the top of the fourth, when third baseman Christina Pigozzi singled through the right side to drive in a run.
Akron pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring all three of its runs with two outs. With Schneider and Roudabush aboard, Taryn Allmon poked a single to center that brought home a run, advancing to second on the throw in from the outfield. Rhodes followed that up with a hard-hit ball up the middle that was enough to score both Roudabush and Allmon, giving UA what was the final 6-2 advantage.
The Zips and the Broncos will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. It will be Akron's eighth annual Strike Out Cancer day, as the team will wear pink uniforms in support of breast cancer research. Pink t-shirts will also be available for fans to purchase for $15.
