CARMEL, Ind. – Day two saw tougher scoring conditions, but the Akron Zips maintained their second-place standing following the third round of the 2014 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship on Saturday.
Tournament-leader Kent State was the lone team to post a round under par (282, -6) as Akron carded a round of 12-over 300. The Zips finished the day with a 54-hole score of 875 (+11) while the Golden Flashes lead the field with a three-round tally of 12-under 852. UA is one shot ahead of third-place Toledo (876, +12).
The trio of Kent State, Akron and Toledo separated themselves from the rest of the field, opening an 11-shot gap between third and fourth place.
Three Zips sit inside the top-15, led by Charlie Bull and Ryan Harris. Both are tied for third place with scores of 2-under 214. Harris' birdie on No. 18 gave him a round of even-par 72 while Bull rallied with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 for a round of 3-over 75.
Freshman Zach Gollwitzer will enter Sunday's final round in a tie for 15th place (223, +7) after posting a round of 6-over 78.
Louis Birchall posted his second round of 3-over 75 of the championship on Saturday to move into a tie for 30th place (229, +13).
J.B. Williams rounded out the scoring-five in a tie for 33rd place after posting a round of 9-over 81. Williams will tee off on Sunday with a three-round score of 228 (+12).
Akron will conclude the 2014 edition of the MAC Championship on Sunday, with the final round set to begin at 7:50 a.m. ET. The Zips' first tee time of the round is slated for 9:30 a.m.
