CARMEL, Ind. – It was the start they were looking for as Charlie Bull holds a share of the day one lead and the Akron Zips are in second place through 36 holes at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship on the par-72, 7,073-yard Prairie View Golf Club.
Akron closed the day just five shots behind five-time defending champion Kent State (570, -6) with a 36-hole score of 575 (-1). The Zips and Golden Flashes are the only teams under par through two rounds as UA is four shots ahead of third-place Toledo (579, +3).
The Zips came out on fire to open play, taking a share of the round one lead with Eastern Michigan with a score of 4-under 284. Akron would drop a few shots early in round two, but rebounded to post a round of 3-over 291 during the afternoon session.
In all, four Zips sit inside the top-25, led by MAC Golfer of the Year candidate Charlie Bull. Bull sits atop the leaderboard with 2012 MAC Individual Champion Corey Conners at 5-under 139.
Bull was the only player in the field to post consecutive rounds of 70 or better, carding a 3-under 69 in the morning followed by a 2-under 70. He saved his second round on the final two holes, closing the round birdie-birdie to erase a double-bogey on No. 16.
Ryan Harris is just three shots off the lead in a tie for fifth place with a score of 2-under 142. He fired back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71.
Freshman Zach Gollwitzer sits in a tie for 12th place with three other players with a 36-hole score of 1-over 145. He went into the red in his first postseason round, carding a 1-under 71 before closing play with a 2-over 74.
J.B. Williams closed play in sole possession of 24th place after posting a 5-over 149. Williams carded rounds of 73 (+1) and 76 (+4).
Louis Birchall rounded out the scoring-five in a tie for 38th place (154, +10) after carding rounds of 3-over 75 and 7-over 79.
Akron will continue play on Saturday, with the third round set to begin at 7:50 a.m. ET. The Zips' first tee time of the round is slated for 9:30 a.m.
